You may be thinking that debt counseling is the answer for you, but be aware sometimes these can mess up your credit worse than it already is. Some of these companies are scams some are honestly trying to help. But I can tell you from experience. (I used to work in collections) That while a system is being set up for you it is likely that you will have more late fees on all accounts and then "compromises" with credit card companies that show up on your credit report. However this is better than bankruptcy.

It is best if you can get a good hold on your finances yourself to save your credit and learn how the credit system really works. It is knowledge that will serve you well forever.

So collection debt help. Time to be honest you spent the money, you pay it back. But how do you do that?

Realistically look at your expenses and make hard but needed cuts. Maybe you could cut out eating out, movies out, cable, alcohol, smoking, new clothes, “stress” shopping, buying cute little accessories for your house. The list could go on and on. The point is every time you make a purchase you have to ask “Do I REALLY need this?” This will free up money for your bills!

Call the credit card company and be honest. I messed up bad. I thought there was going to be money in my account and there wasn’t. More than likely they are just glad you called and will be happy to work something out with you.

Set up a check over the phone payment with them that day to pay the over due balance. Even if the payment is for a future date it shows the company that you are committed to fix the problem.

Ask if they can wave the late fee and over limit fee. Sometimes they will sometimes they won’t. If the person you are talking to won’t they might not have the correct authority to do that so you have to ask nicely for their supervisor.

Set up an auto pay system to pay at least the minimum payments each month. Whether you do this free through your bank or with the company it will keep you on the right track.

Use the role up method to get out of debt as quick as you possibly can.
