As far as cutting costs with children breastfeeding is one of the best. It is basically free, very nutritious, and always ready to go. I have breastfed all my children for a certain amount of time. Having done both formula and nursing, nursing is definitely the money saver.

Breastfeeding was out of vogue in the 1950's & 60's when formula was promoted as healthier. But that has been disproven and while formulas are an option they are not the best option. If a mom eats a good diet and is healthy, her milk will not be the best for her baby. In most developed countries this is rarely an issue. Mother's milk changes as the baby grows and develops to fit his needs. You can save $100-$150/mo by nursing instead of buying formula.

For this page we will focus on the financial aspects of nursing. No bottles are necessary unless you are going to store and reheat your milk. You can get some at a reasonable cost. The best would be to get them from a second hand store and then sterilize them when you get home. A breast pump would be the best way to do this. There are hand pumps at a small cost or used electronic ones. These can also be purchased used. This may sound weird to get a used breast pump, but in reality, they are not used often. So a used one will still have a lot of life left in it. Plus all parts that come in contact with you body or milk are able to be taken apart and sanitized.

Other than that a few nursing pads and the right sized blanket are all you need.

Nursing can be a rewarding experience. It can give you peace of mind knowing you are giving your baby the right food for his age and saving your family money. You are taking care of your baby now and in the future by providing food and financial security. Especially if that saved money goes toward paying down debt or saving for the future.
